Re-Connecting with Your Core Values in Colorado Rehab

Addiction recovery

Core values give meaning and direction to your life, expressing who you are and what you firmly believe to be true and good. When combatting addiction, those same core values are often compromised, ignored, and outright abandoned as the disease takes control.

Identifying your core values and re-connecting with them during treatment is crucial to facilitating strong, long-term addiction recovery. Read on to learn about how to re-connect with those values, and why it is so important.

Steps to Reconnect

The first task is identifying what your core values are. As mentioned, addiction can sometimes cloud over your innermost self, and you may have to do some digging to get your value system back up and running.

One of the easiest ways to start establishing your values is to write them down. Get a notebook, grab a pen, and start writing. This may sound daunting, or silly, or like a waste of time. However, studies have shown that journaling is an extremely useful tool when working toward recovery.

There are a few useful questions that can help get you started:

What is Important to Me?

This can be a free-form writing experiment; start with one-word answers. What do you value? Some examples:

  • Love
  • Honesty
  • Health
  • Independence
  • Respect
  • Family
  • Integrity

The list can go on and on. Once you start to run out of gas, you can go back through your list and highlight the truly key values. Try to pare it down to about five or so. Remember, you can have a long list of values, but this exercise is to identify the core values that make you who you are.

What Do These Values Look Like in My life?

This next step helps you dig a little deeper into your core values by asking you to visualize what they look like in your day-to-day reality. What does honesty look like? Or love? How can you base your recovery on these values in a practical way? Visualizing your core values in action can help you create a meaningful life as you work through your addiction.

What are Some Actionable Steps?

The final task in this exercise helps you develop practical steps you can take today to start making your core values a central part of your recovery. If you value spirituality, how can you implement a spiritual practice into your daily routine? How can you demonstrate love, honesty, integrity, and respect? Maybe it is by performing a random act of kindness every day or making sure you call one person you love on the phone every evening. Whatever you decide, these actions will kick-start you into a life lived with value. You can start to re-connect with who you really are by demonstrating the behaviors and habits that live out your core values, every day.
